ROMUALDO AMARAL: 3D Animator & VFX Artist

In this week’s interview, we sit down with 3D Animator and VFX Artist Romualdo Amaral, whose journey from Brazil to Hollywood is a testament to following your passion. Romualdo's story, from flipping through notebooks to mimic animation as a child to directing an animated short film and working on major projects like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is inspiring. In this interview, Romualdo shares how pre-visualization is key to solving production issues, the value of feedback, and the importance of persistence in the highly competitive VFX and animation industry. His journey offers invaluable lessons for anyone dreaming of entering this field.

Q: How did it all start for you? What drew you toward your department? What was a major influence in your life?

A: I've always had a deep passion for cinema, ever since I was a child. I would flip through school notebooks, drawing sequences that mimicked animation, inspired by the Disney VHS tapes I watched over and over. Video stores were my playground, where I spent hours talking about movies. However, when it came to choosing a college degree in Brazil, I opted for Computer Science, as pursuing an artistic career seemed unrecognized. After discovering the world of Computer Graphics, I knew animation and VFX was my true calling. Influences like Walt Disney and Carlos Saldanha, who created Ice Age and Rio, inspired me to move to the U.S., where I pursued my master's in 3D Animation and Visual Effects. It was the moment my childhood dream began to transform into my career.

Q: What was your first professional job in your department and how did it shape your career?

A: My first professional experience in my field began during my Master's degree, where I directed an animated short film with around 100 volunteer artists. This project allowed me to go through every stage of the animation pipeline, giving me invaluable experience in managing and executing a complex production. Successfully completing this project opened the door to my first major studio work on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. From there, I worked on Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers, which expanded my industry network and set the foundation for my career growth.

Q: How important is planning and pre-visualization in preventing issues during production?

A: Planning and pre-visualization are vital to avoiding issues during production, especially in VFX, where my expertise lies. By visualizing scenes before shooting, filmmakers can identify potential logistical challenges, such as location or lighting issues, and solve them in advance. Pre-visualization also ensures efficient resource use, clear communication among crew members, and significant cost savings by reducing the likelihood of reshoots. Additionally, it allows for creative experimentation and refinement, enabling the team to craft a more polished final product before even stepping on set.

Q: What final piece of advice would you give to someone aspiring to enter your department?

A: For anyone aspiring to enter the world of VFX and animation, my advice is to never give up on your dreams, even when the road is tough. Dedication, studying, and constantly seeking feedback will help you grow and refine your skills. While feedback may be difficult at times, it is key to improvement and recognition. Build connections within the industry, network with other artists, and draw inspiration from professionals you admire. Research artists on platforms like IMDB, explore their portfolios, and let their journeys motivate you. The industry is smaller than it seems, and networking can open doors you might not expect.
