JUSTIN ZAGRI: Director
Justin Zagri, a passionate director, found his calling in filmmaking after being inspired by the movie Fight Club, which opened his eyes to the depth and artistry behind cinema. With a hands-on approach to storytelling, Justin has honed his craft through meticulous planning, storyboarding, and an unwavering commitment to understanding every aspect of the production process. His journey from a 30-day filmmaking course at NYFA Los Angeles to becoming an influential director serves as a testament to his dedication and love for the art of filmmaking.
Q: How did it all start for you? What drew you toward your department? What was a major influence in your life?
A: It all started with the movie FIGHT CLUB, which helped me realize there was much more to movies than entertainment. I took a 30 day filmmaking course at NYFA Los Angeles and was hooked from there. The biggest influences really are other movies, and hearing from other directors on how they approach their craft.
Q: How do you approach the initial planning and conceptualization phase of a new project?
A: I try to overplan using storyboards and shot lists, knowing I won't be able to get everything I want. Having every scene known in my head to such an extent allows for flexibility and improvisation. Effectively I edit the movie in my head before we shoot, so if we're short on time or a shot isn't working, I can 'change the edit' in my head and make changes on the day.
Q:How important is planning and pre-visualization in preventing issues during production?
A: It should be a requirement. I have minimal experience with pre-viz, but I always thoroughly storyboard my projects, and work with department heads so they know exactly what I'm looking to do, and understand exactly what they need to make sure it's done correctly and smoothly.
Q: What final piece of advice would you give to someone aspiring to enter your department?
A: Directing doesn't have a lot of literature on how to do it effectively because there are so many ways to do it. So the best way to learn is by doing, with direct experience.
But one thing I'd say ALL directors need to work on, which isn't always easy...is to communicate effectively with everyone. Actors first, then your department heads. Take lots of acting classes, act in your own play or shoot, take a director of photography course so you know the language of lighting, edit your own stuff so you can collaborate with your editor, learn sheet music so you can use the right vernacular with your composer. Internalize the basics of every department you work with. It's an un-ending journey, which is why I love it so much!
Through his experiences, Justin emphasizes the importance of overplanning, pre-visualization, and effective communication with every department involved in a production. His advice to aspiring directors is clear: immerse yourself in every facet of filmmaking to become a well-rounded and effective leader on set.
